These days we should heed the admonition we were given as kids…
Hold Your Friend’s Hand…
And Look Both Ways…
Before Crossing the Street!
Our world seems quite scary at the moment… So many yucky things are going on it makes my head spin. We are bombarded with horribly tragic news everywhere we look. Plus, let’s not even start talking about the election. It can get a little overwhelming.
But then every once in a while hope emerges from the ashes of despair. Every once in a while you see a glimpse of a promise that perhaps humankind isn’t hell-bent on destroying each other after all. Perhaps there IS a silver lining behind every cloud.
Every once in a while you have the privilege of encountering someone like Jaden Hayes.
Already at 6-years-old, Jaden has experienced a lot of pain. At 4-years-old – he lost his Dad. At 6-years-old – his Mom died unexpectedly in her sleep. How much tragedy can a young life take? Did I mention that Jaden is the one who found her dead? <Sigh>
While he was deeply saddened by his loss, Jaden somehow started noticing there were lots of people around him who looked like they were also sad. He decided to do something about it. Of course it’s a tad bit embarrassing that this 6-year-old is already way more mature than I can ever hope to be… But oh well… I’ll get over it… lol.
To be honest, last week I was busy throwing a pity party for 1. To be fair to myself, there are several valid reasons for this. Like for many of us, there is a lot that’s not going well for me at the moment on several fronts and it’s extremely frustrating and overwhelming. But the thing is… instead of seeing beyond myself into the fact that others might also be having a hard time… I threw my own little pity party. No one else was invited… No, not even you.
However, I will say that the appetizers were delicious and the decorations were fabulous. I mean, it just wouldn’t be a real party without them, right?
On top of it all, I was faced with too many real housewife shows to recap with insipidly inane storylines. There are just certain housewives that will always make my brain melt…lol.
When I least expected it, a couple of people said some nice things on social media… Then several of you provided valuable feedback to a question I asked on Facebook… Then Reality_Bytes sent an incredibly encouraging email that helped put things into perspective… Then Orson sent me this video (Thank you, Orson!) that came at the absolutely perfect time. This all helped me to reevaluate where I was at, what I was doing, and why I was doing it.
Do things about my life still suck at the moment? Yes.
But I can change how I respond to it. I’ve decided to create another category of post on this site and simply call it, “Joy.” This will be a place for posts that are designed to bring joy in the midst of all of the yucky stuff going on in our lives and in the world. It could really be just about anything… There’s a plethora of things that bring joy, no?
Meanwhile, back to Jaden… I don’t want to give too much content of the video away – because it’s really worth the view and I highly encourage you to view it. But I will say this…
After viewing the video… Mr. Stars gave me this… Yes, that’s a Green Lantern Rubber Ducky… And my heart melted… And I smiled.
Jaden’s right… Rubber ducks and dinosaurs ARE the best!
